Participation

Why should I participate in the Symposium?

  • Build your résumé, CV, and/or portfolio.
  • Showcase your academic and creative works.
  • Extend your network with graduate students and faculty from across disciplines.
  • Eligible to be awarded a Symposium Scholarship Award.
  • Receive feedback on your work from graduate faculty judges.
  • Prepare for future presentations, conferences, and performances.
  • Have the opportunity for your work to be published in UNI ScholarWorks at http://scholarworks.uni.edu/.  

What are the event’s presentation and performance opportunities?

  • The three Symposium categories are Poster Presentations, Oral Presentations, and Creative Performances. Review the Symposium website for detailed information on each category including the specific category Judging Forms at http://www.grad.uni.edu/graduate-student-symposium.

I want to participate but don’t know where to start!

  • Registration opens January 14, 2019.
  • Review the Symposium website and then meet with your faculty advisor to discuss your ideas for a Poster Presentation, Oral Presentation, or Creative Performance.
  • Attend the Graduate College workshops, "Preparing and Presenting Poster Presentations at Professional Conferences" by Dr. Jennifer J. Waldron, Associate Vice President for Research & Innovation and Dean of the Graduate College, on Wednesday, January 23 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. in Sabin 102 Computer Lab and/or "Preparing and Presenting Oral Presentations at Professional Conferences” by Dr. Gabriela Olivares, Associate Dean of the Graduate College, on Tuesday, January 22 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. in Rod Library ScholarSpace Room 301. I am not writing a thesis/dissertation. Can I participate?

  • Yes. Research including data-based, literature reviews or creative works at any level are welcome.

Does my research have to be completed to participate?

  • No. You can present your research that is in progress. 

Who can participate?

  • All current UNI graduate students as well as December 2018 graduates are invited to participate. Undergraduates may co-present and/or accompany a performance by a graduate student.

Registration Information

When is registration deadline?

  • Friday, March 1, 2019 is the deadline to register, although registration for a specific category will be closed prior to that date if the category is filled.
  • Keep in mind that your presentation or performance does not have to be completed at the time of registration.
  • Registrations are processed as received.

What is the registration fee?

  • There is no registration fee. The Graduate College presents the Symposium as a professional development experience for all graduate students.

How do I register?

  • Complete the Google Registration Form.
    • You must complete the Form using your UNI email address.
    • PROOFREAD your completed registration prior to submission since it will be accepted as received. Make a copy for yourself by clicking the option at the end of the form.
    • Remember to click Submit. If you experience technical difficulties when submitting your registration, contact gradlife@uni.edu.
  • Following your submission, a confirmation email will be sent to you and the Faculty Advisor listed on your submission from gradlife@uni.edu.

Once I register, how will I receive information and updates about the Symposium?

  • You will receive information and updates from the Graduate College by email (gradlife@uni.edu). Please pay attention to the details included in these emails. General updates will be posted on the Symposium website.

What are the specific requirements for the Abstract?

  • Your abstract is part of the judging process. Be sure it is written clearly, succinctly (250 word limit) and is error-free in grammar and spelling before submitting your registration. 

Presentation Guidelines

Can I present or perform a previously presented/performed work at the Symposium?

  • Yes, you can present or perform your work although you may need to modify your presentation or performance to meet the Symposium Guidelines for that category.

Can I present or perform in more than one category?

  • Yes, but your second work needs to be a different work than what you presented in the other category.

Logistics

Where and when does the Symposium take place?

  • The 12th Annual Graduate Student Symposium is scheduled for Wednesday, April 3, 2019.
  • The Poster Presentations are scheduled in the Maucker Union Ballroom as follows:
    • Presenters Set Up Posters: 9:00- 10:45 a.m.
    • Judging: 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
    • Public Viewing: 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
  • The Oral Presentations are scheduled in the Lower Level Meeting Rooms of the Maucker Union from 1:00- 4:00 p.m. The presentation schedule will be determined based upon registration. All oral presentations will occur within this time frame and the Graduate College will try to accommodate students' class schedules as much as possible.  Oral presenters must be present 30 minutes before their presentation.
  • The Creative Performances will be scheduled in the Maucker Union Ballroom beginning at noon.

Who is the audience?

  • The University community is invited to attend the event as is the general public. Remember to invite your fellow students, faculty, and friends!

Who are the judges? What is the judging criteria for each category?

  • UNI graduate faculty from a variety of disciplines serve as judges for the Symposium. Selected judges are familiar and well-versed in their respective category. The Judging Form for each category is included on the Symposium website on the specific category page. It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the judging criteria prior to the event. You will receive an email summary of the judges’ comments following the event.

Symposium Scholarship Awards

What are the Symposium Scholarship Awards?

  • Awarding of prizes in all categories is at the judges' discretion and the judges reserve the right to not award a prize. In presentations or performances with co- presenters or performers, only the primary presenter/performer as designated on the Registration Form, will receive the prize.
  • The Symposium Scholarship Award amounts are as follows:
    • Poster Presentations:
      • 1st Place- $300
      • 2nd Place- $200
      • 3rd Place- $150
      • Honorable Mention- $100
    • Oral Presentations:
      • 1st Place- $300 per presentation room
      • 2nd Place- $200 per presentation room
    • Creative Performances:
      • 1st Place- $300
      • 2nd Place- $200

How are the Symposium Scholarship Awards administered?

  • Symposium Scholarship Awards are submitted by the Graduate College to the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships within a few days following the event. The Symposium Scholarship Award will then be posted to your U-Bill. This award will become part of your financial aid package.
  • A refund may or may not be processed depending on the amount of your loans, your Symposium Scholarship Award, and your U-Bill balance.
  • If you borrowed the maximum allowed in student loans for the semester then the Symposium Scholarship Award will replace student loans that have been borrowed.
  • If you did not borrow the maximum allowed for the semester, then the Symposium Scholarship Award amount will be applied to your U-Bill and it will not result in a payment to the student loans you may have borrowed for the term. Note: If you have any outstanding U-Bill balance from the current term, have granted permission for miscellaneous fee to be paid with financial aid, your Symposium Scholarship Award will be applied to the balance. If the balance is from a previous term, the Symposium Scholarship Award will NOT automatically pay the balance.
  • If a refund is processed and you are signed up for direct deposit, the refund will be in your bank account in 2-3 business days after crediting. If you are not signed up for direct deposit, a paper check can be picked up at the Cashier's Office located in Gilchrist Hall.
  • As a reminder, even if a refund is processed, please check your U-Bill to make sure no outstanding charges are still pending as the Symposium Scholarship Award will not pay for previous semester charges.
