March 30, 2020: Graduate College Update

Financial Aid Resources

We recognize that many of our students are facing financial crises during this time of change. Information about funds accessible to students will be added to this page as it becomes available. The Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships has more information on their website.

Graduate Assistantships & Tuition Scholarships

We will do everything possible, within policies, to maintain funding for the 2020-2021 academic year. If residential programs are virtual/online for the 2020 Fall semester, supervisors will be prepared to provide remote work. (Note: International students who remain in their home (or another) country will not be eligible for a GA).

Policy Changes

Policy changes have been made in order to provide the flexibility needed for students to meet their academic goals. Information will continue to be updated here as decisions are made. Students should contact their advisor for more information when making decisions.

Thesis & Dissertation Updates

The campus community is strongly urged to consider virtual options to complete defenses and thesis requirements. The Graduate College understands that this will take time to coordinate and adapt to. Please note the adjusted deadlines below to help support these efforts.

SUMMER 2020 SUBMISSION

Approval:

We ask that all committee members send an email of approval to gradcollege@uni.edu at the conclusion of the student's defense. This will replace the hard copy approval pages that are typically submitted.

Submission:

Students need to submit their final, defended copy for review to gradcollege@uni.edu by no later than the submission deadline (June 26, 2020). Once they submit their final copy, they will be contacted with the final steps. No hard copies will be collected for summer 2020.

Information can be found on the Formatting Guide and appointments can be made using the Appointment Calendar.

Fall 2020

As the semester comes to an end, you may have some questions about the future. According to an April 25 story in the Des Moines Register, the Iowa Board of Regents is “envisioning some semblance of normalcy returning this fall, with all three public universities working toward a full, normal operation for the 2020 fall semester.” That having been said, we know the COVID-19 disruption will continue to be fluid and decisions about the 2020 fall semester will continue to be made during the summer. UNI and the Graduate College are ready for you.
