Joslyn reminded the Council about the Annual Graduate Faculty meeting scheduled for April 13. Recipients of graduate student awards and faculty research awards will be honored and Dr. Koob will present plaques to those in attendance.
A reception for graduating graduate students is planned for Friday, May 5, in downtown Cedar Falls. Faculty mentors will be invited to attend.
The Registrar’s Office staff continues to work on the transition away from WebCT to a web-based program of study.
4. Chair of the Graduate Faculty Report
None.
5. Information: Graduate Career Services
Susie Schwieger, Associate Director in the Advising & Career Services office, and Michael Girsch, graduate assistant in the Graduate College, were introduced. Career Services and the Graduate College have developed a partnership to provide services for graduate students. A website is being developed to assist graduate students with professional development, writing cover letters, resumes and vitas. A prototype site was demonstrated with the launch scheduled for fall 2006. A link to the site will be on the Graduate College website and on the Graduate College tab in MyUniverse.
6. Action: Suspension/Probation Policy
Joslyn distributed the Graduate College Review of Departmental Dismissal policy from the 2004-2006 UNI Catalog as well as the proposed change to the policy. After discussion, Pohl moved to accept the new policy as distributed. Motion was seconded and passed.
7. Action: Establishment of Friend of Graduate Education Award
Joslyn explained the request to establish a Friend of Graduate Education Award. The establishment of this new award falls under Strategy 3.4.4 in the Graduate Education Strategic Plan. A committee will be formed in the fall so that policies and procedures for giving the award can be developed. Nelson moved to establish a Friend of Graduate Education Award. The motion was seconded and passed. Nelson asked if the award could be given to someone in the community and Joslyn indicated that is a possibility.
Nelson moved that the first Friend of Graduate Education Award be given to President Koob. The motion was seconded and passed. Joslyn stated the award will be given to President Koob at the Annual Graduate Faculty meeting.
8. Other Business
Joslyn indicated there is occasionally a problem with obtaining information from other institutions regarding transfer evaluation requests. Joslyn stated she always supports the department in the transfer of credit but asked the Council their opinion in cases where evaluation requests are not completed. Bozylinsky feels it is best to leave a lot of discretion to the department. Nelson tended to agree unless there is violation of a UNI policy.
Bozylinsky announced that he was offered and has accepted a position at the University of Rhode Island-Kingston, which will begin July 1. His title will be Vice Provost for Information Technology.
9. Adjournment
Moore moved to adjourn. Motion was seconded and passed. Meeting adjourned at 4:22 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Shirley Uehle
Secretary
